“Star Search” depicts the daily life of sea otters. When sea otters need to anchor themselves in strong tidal currents, they roll themselves in the long ropey kelp leaves. Often, an anchored nursing female will have shellfish delivered to her by her mate. Besides being fascinating tool-users they also capture a sculptor’s imagination with their fluidity, gentle faces and graceful underwater acrobatics. The frozen Arctic is home to these unique creatures which can weigh up to two tons each. Hugely social, they hunt and feed in packs where their long ivory tusks are used as tools to scrape up the bottom of the seabed to reveal clams and other mollusks. Walruses were a staple item in the native people’s food supply and native hunters are really the only threat to these animals as even polar bears shy away from the potentially lethal defenders. ”Two Tons of Love” depicts a large amorous bull with one member of his harem. A sow polar bear and her two cubs float upon an ever diminishing ice floe. Few species has been as profoundly impacted by climate change as the polar bear. In need of ice for their existance , they drift and search for adequate feeding grounds. One can only lament their uncertain future. Each year in May, along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Mexico, the Stellar sea lions “haul out” in breeding groups to birth and care for their young. The large bull watches over his boistrous harem. ”Sea Dogs” captures the seeming kaos of the rookery during this mating season. With whistling pinions a pair of Canada Geese prepare to touch down at the edge of the slough where their family of goslings are scurrying to the protection of the cat-tails.
